PRINCETON, NJ, January 10, 2007 -- The American Red Cross recognizes January as National Blood Donor Month. During this annual, month-long observance, the American Red Cross is encouraging healthy individuals to donate blood in January and to pledge to donate blood at least one more time during 2007. Typically January is a difficult month to collect blood donations due to holidays, busy travel schedules, inclement weather and illness. To make an appointment to donate at the American Red Cross Blood Donor Center in Princeton or at a Red Cross blood drive located near you, please call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (1-800-448-3543), or visit www.pleasegiveblood.org to find a listing of community blood drives.

Every day in our country, approximately 39,000 units of blood are required in hospitals and emergency treatment facilities for patients with cancer and other diseases, for organ transplant recipients, and to help save the lives of accident victims. Our goal is to help ensure that blood is available to patients whenever and wherever it is needed because it is the blood on the shelves that helps saves lives.

“If you have considered donating blood, yet never had, now is the time, said Brigid O’Neill-LaGier, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Blood Services, Penn-Jersey Region. Regular blood donors and new blood donors are all being called upon to help NOW by making and KEEPING an appointment to donate blood.”

It takes a strong partnership between the community and the American Red Cross to continue to serve the lifesaving transfusion needs of hospital patients. January is the perfect time to commit or recommit to this mission, and together, we can save lives. Blood has to be available, on the shelves, when and where it is needed in anticipation of patient need. Communities can’t wait for something to happen to make a decision to donate. Regular blood donation is the key to ensuring that blood is available to anyone who needs it.

Most healthy people who are at least 17 years old and weigh 110 pounds or more are eligible to donate every 56 days. Donors can give blood at any one of nearly 200 bloodmobiles sponsored by business and community groups in southeastern Pennsylvania and in New Jersey weekly, or at one of nine community donor centers. To make an immediate appointment for an American Red Cross blood drive this week, please call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (1-800-448-3543), or visit www.pleasegiveblood.org to find a listing of community blood drives.
