Thursday, January 16, 2003 — Princeton, NJ — U.S. Representative Rush Holt spoke at a press conference expressing his support for "Disaster Preparedness for Businesses," a partnership between the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey and local businesses.  Speakers at the press conference included representatives from Drinker, Biddle & Reath, LLP, Princeton, NJ; ITXC, Princeton, NJ; Laureate Pharma, Princeton, NJ and Merrill Lynch, Plainsboro, NJ, four local businesses that understand the importance of preparing their employees for the unexpected and the need to establish partnerships toward ensuring disaster preparedness.

After experiencing the effects of events such as Hurricane Floyd and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, many companies have been grappling with how to effectively prepare their employees for these and other potential disasters both natural and man-made.  Unsure of the reality of additional attacks, what to tell employees or how to prepare them, businesses have been individually contacting the American Red Cross for additional resources and support.

Purpose of the program
To create a partnership between the American Red Cross and businesses in the central New Jersey area which promotes, supports and enables emergency preparedness and response and allows rapid normalization of productivity, commerce and quality of life following an emergency for businesses, employees, their families and the community.

Objectives of the partnership
The partnership between businesses and the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey provides several essential services, including:

  • Accelerated recovery through a coordinated exchange of status and resource information between businesses, the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey, and local emergency management.
  • Accelerated return to work through increased preparedness of employees and their families.
  • Valid, accurate, and immediate response during times of disaster, which assists businesses, employees and the central New Jersey area to respond.
  • A forum to identify and mitigate hazards that could affect businesses, employees, their families, customers and the central New Jersey community.
  • Increased communication of emergency situations between governmental, non-governmental, businesses and their employees.
  • Increased knowledge of how to prepare and respond to a disaster for businesses and their employees.
  • A system for resource sharing between businesses in emergency times.

Together, we can save a life
