PRINCETON, NJ, March 22, 2007 – Area mayors spent yesterday’s lunch hour delivering meals to clients of the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey’s Home Delivered Meals Program. Five area mayors and one deputy mayor joined hundreds of mayors throughout the country participating in national Mayors for Meals Day. Mayors for Meals Day aims to raise awareness about senior hunger and show support for the senior nutrition programs that deliver meals daily to older adults and those homebound and unable to prepare meals for themselves.

“We are grateful that our local mayors recognize the need for these services in our community,” said Rose Berger, community services director with the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey. “Mobility is an issue with many of our Home Delivered Meals clients and they depend on the daily meals and visits from caring volunteers.”

Participating mayors included Peter Cantu of Plainsboro; Shing-Fu Hsueh of West Windsor; Phyllis Marchand of Princeton Township; Janice Mironov of East Windsor; Mayor Mildred Trotman of Princeton Borough; and Deputy Mayor Hal English of Hamilton Township.

The American Red Cross of Central New Jersey’s Home Delivered Meals Program delivered 51,365 meals throughout the Mercer County area last year with the help of 220 dedicated Red Cross volunteers. For additional information about the Home Delivered Meals Programs or to volunteer and help deliver meals, contact Rose Berger at 1-877-808-2800 or email bergerr@njredcross.org.

Mayors for Meals Day is a component of March for Meals, a national campaign by the Meals on Wheels Association of America. The American Red Cross of Central New Jersey is a participant in this national campaign.
