PRINCETON, NJ, April 20, 2007 – This week’s Nor’easter will cost $5 million in Red Cross relief across the Northeast, according to initial estimates. The storm shut down roads, flooded homes and cut off electricity to more than 700,000 homes and businesses from Maine to Pennsylvania. While the rain has stopped in many areas, the American Red Cross is still assisting thousands of people who have been affected by the storm and is asking for donations to its Disaster Relief Fund.

“The sun may be shining now, but for thousands of people, the long cleanup process is just beginning,” says Kevin Sullivan, CEO of the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey. “We are reaching out to our community to ask that people give to the Disaster Relief Fund to help victims of this storm and other disasters.”

The Red Cross opened more than 50 shelters because of the storm, and some are still operating for people who have been forced out of their homes by flooding and power outages. In New Jersey, one of the hardest hit states, more than 1,000 people have sought refuge in Red Cross shelters. Many shelters have closed, but some remain open as people wait for electricity to resume or seek an alternate place to stay.

The Red Cross is partnering with community organizations, as well as state governments to provide critical services to those in need. As the waters begin to recede, the Red Cross continues to assess the situation and provide shelter, food, water, clean up and comfort kits, and medical and mental health services as needed.

Affected Red Cross chapters are reaching out to their donors and communities and asking for contributions to help provide assistance to victims of flooding in the Northeast. People interested in making a financial contribution can do so by contacting their local chapter or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS or go to

The Disaster Relief Fund allows the American Red Cross to provide the essentials of emergency assistance, food, shelter, clothing, mental health counseling, as well as other basic necessities to victims of all types of disasters. More importantly, this fund gives the Red Cross and its volunteers the capacity to immediately meet the needs of victims by enabling the organization to act before donations are made – when help is needed the most.

“The American Red Cross will always be there for people whenever and wherever disaster strikes. But since we are not a government agency, we depend on the voluntary contributions and giving of the American people to help us do our work,” says Kevin Sullivan.
