PRINCETON, NJ, June 15, 2006 – The American Red Cross of Central New Jersey’s 2006 Car Raffle raised over $181,000 for local programs and services. These services include disaster response, meals delivered to the elderly and homebound, providing a safe supply of blood to area hospitals, emergency preparedness education, and lifesaving health and safety training.

The Car Raffle concluded with the drawing of ticket #1382 on June 5th. The lucky winner, Joe Villa of Brooklyn, New York, was sold the winning ticket by Red Cross staffer Kathleen Foley. Mr. Villa will receive a brand new Passion Red 2006 Volvo C70, generously donated to the Red Cross chapter by Volvo Cars of North America and Long Motor Company.

“Both Volvo Cars’ and the American Red Cross’ strong commitment to safety made this partnership a win-win in our eyes,” said Tassos Panas, vice president, Volvo Cars, Northeast Region. “Our donation not only had one lucky family win an all new C70, but also helped this Red Cross chapter raise the funds needed to help spread lifesaving training throughout their community with programs like the School Safety Initiative.”

The School Safety Initiative brings Red Cross First Aid and CPR courses to teachers and students in inner cities. Championed by David Long of Long Motor Company, the School Safety Initiative helped introduce Red Cross training and basic safety procedures into the lives
of more than 6,800 school children in Trenton during the 2004-2005 school year. The American Red Cross of Central New Jersey plans to bring this highly successful safety program into schools in New Brunswick.

The American Red Cross of Central New Jersey is a non-governmental agency that serves the people of Mercer, Middlesex, Hunterdon, and parts of Somerset counties. Led by volunteers, the Red Cross offers a broad array of vital services to our community in need. You can help, too – Volunteer your time, make a monetary donation, donate blood, and/or take a CPR course.
