PRINCETON, NJ, August 16, 2005 – World-Class Harley-Davidson has a new addition in their Trenton showroom. Although it can easily be associated with words like power, delivery and jumpstart, this machine doesn’t have any wheels or a rearview mirror.

After reading how a small portable device made the difference between life and death in a Princeton office earlier this year, Harley-Davidson dealership owner Harry Divins contacted the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey to purchase an automated external defibrillator (AED) and set up Red Cross combined CPR/AED training for his employees.

“I told my General Manager I want an AED on hand and I want her to know how to use it,” said Divins, adding “just in case she needs to bring me back someday.”

Trenton World-Class Harley-Davidson joins the growing list of businesses to have AEDs available for quick use if needed for customers or employees. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of adult death in the United States. Many of these deaths can be prevented if someone quickly initiates the Cardiac Chain of Survival* and an AED is available for immediate use. Every minute it takes emergency medical services to arrive, chance of survival is reduced by 10%.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is caused by a cardiac arrhythmia known as ventricular fibrillation and the only effective emergency treatment involves the delivery of an electric shock to the heart using an AED. CPR extends the time window to deliver a successful shock.

“We’re pleased to see Harley-Davidson take safety to the next level by having this lifesaving equipment on hand and learning how to use it. It shows how much they care about their employees, their customers and their community,” said Kathy Schroeder, workplace/AED administrator for the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey.

NOTE TO MEDIA: Red Cross First Aid Course and CPR Training/AED Instruction at Trenton World-Class Harley-Davidson will be open to media on Tuesday, August 30, 2005, 10:30–11:00 AM. Contact Diane Concannon, 609-951-2116, for interview/photo/footage opportunities.
