PRINCETON, NJ, October 2, 2006 – The American Red Cross of Central New Jersey wants local businesses and organizations to be prepared to survive when they are impacted by disaster. The common perception is that the major threat is a catastrophic event like a hurricane or terrorist attack. Unfortunately, many fail to recognize the impact that the more frequently occurring events, such as localized flooding, power outages and fires, can have on the survival of their business.

The conference, hosted by the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey, aims to arm attendees with the tools to face these threats:

The Day After…Getting Back to BUSINESS!
4th Annual Disaster Preparedness Conference
October 11, 2006
7:30 am – 4:00 pm
Holiday Inn, National Conference Center
East Windsor, NJ

The focus of this year’s conference is on recovery. As a centerpiece, a panel of representatives from Gulf Coast Chambers of Commerce, United Ways, and Red Cross Chapters will address their recovery challenges following Hurricane Katrina.

Verizon and Jersey Central Power & Light are sponsors of the conference.

“Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) is committed to making communities throughout our service area better places to live, work and do business,” said Gerry Ricciardi, area manager for the electric utility company. “We are pleased to partner with the FirstEnergy Foundation, Verizon and the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey to reinforce the importance of preparedness and safety.”

The conference provides a daylong series of workshops and sessions to help Central New Jersey businesses, organizations, schools and community members become better prepared, and ultimately safer, when a disaster occurs. Morning workshops are separated into Business, Nonprofit, and School sessions. Afternoon workshops are led by county Offices of Emergency Management, providing the opportunity to learn about local resources available for planning and recovery, local initiative updates, and community based drill potential.

For more details about the Conference or to register online, visit or call Hugh Adams at 609-951-2107. Chamber members should register through their chambers of commerce to receive a discount. As an added benefit, attendees will earn credit towards a variety of professional accreditation.

The American Red Cross of Central New Jersey partnered with Princeton Regional, Middlesex County Regional, Mercer Regional, and Hunterdon County Chambers of Commerce, The United Ways of Hunterdon and Greater Mercer Counties, and the Insurance Council of New Jersey to present this year’s conference.
